Update January 12 2025: Safety first in flood recovery

Dear Fellow Plot holders

Thankyou everyone who has come on site so far to help with our recovery plan, and particularly the volunteers who turned up today with Liz K and Stephen R.

You’ve done great things to make a start on our devastation, and we all appreciate how much hard work there is ahead.

We are all keen to get set for spring, but can I please stress to you all the importance of safety first.

The icy conditions are making even more treacherous the conditions underfoot: there are a range of trip hazards including broken glass, string and rope, and sharp spikes of metal and wood. The ground is dirty and full of unpleasant contaminants. Please make sure you have strong footwear, strong gloves and when you leave site, please wash down thoroughly.

Please don’t bring dogs or youngsters on site…there is far too much broken glass.

Also please make sure your tetanus is up to date.

If you visit Withington golf club to retrieve viable items, this is at your own risk: there is no comeback or compensation from them if you are injured. There’s water on the course and ice, and occasional ponds which are dangerous to those who don’t know the links.

Apologies , this sounds like a long list of rules, but it really is crucial to put safety first, thanks.

In other news we are constantly chasing the council for better site security, rubbish removal, soil testing and other assistance. I understand their priority must be the households who have been evacuated but they do need to pay heed to our safety and to our recovery too.

Please keep in your diaries the meetings we have planned on February 2 and March 2 , both at 2pm in St Catherine’s Community Hall, School Lane, M20 6HS.

There’s a host of advice on government websites about food contamination and disposing of  waste. I certainly won’t be eating any of my crops that have been underwater and we are asking for advice and tests from the authorities about next season. More information on that on February 2.

Meantime please stay safe at all times and thanks for all the commitment you are giving to help the recovery of Bradley Fold.

Best regards from all the committee,

Janine Cottingham.

Chair.
